After lots of teasing, Lorde officially announced her comeback single "What Was That" on Wednesday (April 16).

"My new song What Was That. Out soon," she captioned an Instagram post. The photo, which was shot by photographer Talia Chetrit, shows the singer looking at the camera in a red shirt with double braids in her hair as water drips down her face.

Lorde gave fans a preview of the single last week in her first ever TikTok. The clip is soundtracked by a snippet of the song, as she sings: “Since I was 17, I gave you everything / Now we wake from a dream, well baby, what was that?”

"What Was That" will be the New Zealand artist's first new music since her 2021 album Solar Power. Although she didn't reveal when fans can expect the song to drop, the bio on her Spotify page now reads 4.25, which could hint at the release date being April 25.

Although four years seems like a long time between albums, it might have been her plan all along. Lorde released her first album, Pure Heroine, in 2013. Her sophomore album Melodrama came out in 2017 and four years after that came Solar Power.
